GSL News Jan14

5 January 2014

Dear Scout Supporter,
A very Happy New Year to you and yours as we start the Spring Term. Here is my news…

Membership Meeting
As January begins the leaders have to count all Scouts for the annual census.
For every Scout we need to pay a capitation fee which includes insurance for all activities.
It is important that subs are paid at the ‘Membership Meeting’ at the start of term and paperwork is completed.
Please email me and/or your Scout leader if you are unable to make this first membership meeting and other arrangements can be made to ensure a place for your child.

Membership Meeting Dates – Beavers Thursday 9th, Cubs Wednesday 8th, Scouts Tuesday 7th and Explorers Wednesday 8th January 2014.

Before the end of term you should have been given a Membership form and an envelope for subs, £35 a term. Extra forms and envelopes will be available. When you drop off your child please stay for a cuppa so we can check the forms and process the subs.
We will have a small team of extra helpers in the foyer to assist us to sign up our members quickly.
Thank you for your help and support.

Membership Meeting Date – Beavers Thursday 9th January 2014.
This term Zoe is based at an Anglesey school so will be able to lead Beavers. Six Beavers were invested in December and we hope a few more will take their promise in January. Megan Round has joined us as young volunteer, she is working for her Duke of Edinburgh Award. The Beavers have completed their Promise Challenge and Faith Activity badges. Played loads of great games and had lots of fun at the panto. They will be working on their Global Challenge badge and we hope to organise a ‘Beaver Sleepover’.

Membership Meeting Date – Cubs Wednesday 8th January 2014.
Cubs had a full term of varied and fun activities including a swimming evening, first aid badges, visits from the police and culminating with the panto which was enjoyed by everyone. This term we are hoping to be having some adventures in the dark and are also brushing up on some basic scouting skills ready for the lighter evenings.

Membership Meeting Date – Tuesday 7th January 2014.
Scouts had a busy term completing the Welsh Democracy badge and they built amazing ginger bread houses, castles, a yacht and a Tardis!
The Scouts applied for a grant towards archery kit and were awarded £956.20 by the Ynys Môn Community Chest Panel, for kit to be used by all sections, subject to us finding £500 as our contribution to the project. This term they will be working on their Promise Challenge badge to support the Investiture Event on 22nd March. A Hobbit Camp is planned for 5th to 6th April.

Membership Meeting Date – Wednesday 8th January 2014.
Explorers have had a shed load of fun with duct tape provided by 3M. They will be using this in some of our rafting activities. Be afraid! Be very afraid! This coming term the Explorers will be ensuring everyone knows all the basic Scouting skills – from knots to backwoods cooking.
Steve will be away in South America for the first three meetings but Becca, Niall, Aly and others will be running the meetings in his absence.
The dates for Scot-Trek are 19th – 28th July 2014 and will include going up Ben Nevis and Schiehallion.

To Laurence Jones and Ngoc Bich, Scout leaders, who were married on Monday 30th December, we look forward to welcoming back Mr & Mrs Jones on Tuesday.

Have you seen our mini bus parked at the hall? There will be a ‘name the bus’ competition coming soon.
